COMMUNITY POLICE ACADEMY
The first graduation of the Community Police Academy took place on June 8, 2023. The Community Police Academy was held one day a week for nine weeks. The residents of King and Queen County came together and learned about the Sheriff's office and the intricacies of policing. Marcus Alert (Mental Health Awareness Response & Community Understanding Services)
The ‘Marcus Alert,’ a statewide mental health alert system to ensure behavioral health experts are involved in responding to individuals in crisis, including by limiting the role of law enforcement. The legislation creates a mental health awareness response and community understanding services (Marcus) alert system, and creates teams of mental health service providers and peer recovery specialists to promote a behavioral health response to individuals in crisis, including those with substance abuse disorder and developmental disabilities.
Starting July 1, 2021, localities had to establish a voluntary database to be made available to the 911 alert system to provide mental health information and emergency contact information for response to an emergency or crisis.
